How to get what you want without falling out

the big difference

The difference in the way you approach Internal Negotiations vs External Negotiations is all about relationships.

It's like preparing to argue with your friend as opposed to arguing with a complete stranger. On the same topic.

You have to think more carefully about your choice of words and actions when you are dealing with someone with whom you will have to work or live in the future. You might have to ask them for more favours in the future. They might want favours back. You have common interests - at the very least at work - you might even be friends.

Of course, there are many shades of grey in this. You might have a great relationship with a particular supplier or customer. The best way to approach it is to focus non-emotionally on the objective.

Simply put, though:

  • Internal Negotations tend to be more prolonged and sensitive.

  • External Negotiations (especially on limited factors) can be short and brutal.
